What is Laser Dentistry?

When children share their dental fears, the subjects they bring up the most often are drills and needles. These tools have served dentists well for generations of safe and effective care, but with laser dentistry they can stay nestled away while children receive excellent, state-of-the-art dental care.

We use Waterlase technology in our office for a precise, pain-free dental experience. Waterlase uses a water-energized beam that’s powerful enough to cut through soft and hard tissue to perform a number of routine dental procedures. It works by applying a concentrated laser beam to excite water molecules and gently cut through tissue. While the laser works, it delivers a continuous spray of water to clean and cool the treatment area. Waterlase can perform the same functions of dental drilling without the uncomfortable vibrations, pressure, or heat. It’s so gentle that local anesthesia is frequently not even necessary for routine procedures, completely skipping over the need of needles or numbing.

Laser Therapy Frenectomy vs Traditional Frenectomy

At Aviator Pediatric Dentistry, we prefer laser therapy to perform frenectomies. This modern solution has many upsides compared to traditional frenectomies that use dental scissors.

A soft-tissue laser gently removes the restrictive area instead of cutting through for minimal bleeding and discomfort for your little one. The laser sterilizes as it goes to prevent infection and promote quick, healthy healing. With less trauma and bleeding, parents have more peace of mind with a laser therapy option.

Benefits of Laser Dentistry

There are no compromises in quality when opting for laser dental care of traditional tools. In fact, modern Waterlase technology offers several unique advantages over traditional drilling techniques:

  • Precision: Waterlase delivers an accurate laser to only remove tissue that’s necessary for treatment. Since drilling is less precise, healthy parts of the tooth are more likely to be affected while removing decayed areas before performing restorative procedures.
  • Less risk of cross contamination: When traditional tools are reused, there’s an inherent risk of cross contamination. Dental lasers never make direct contact with any area of the mouth and take advantage of single-use tips to remain contaminate-free from patient to patient.
  • Comfort: With unfamiliar vibrations, heat, and pressure, drills can cause discomfort for children. All of these concerns are out of the picture with laser dentistry. The thin beam works without direct contact to teeth or gum, and the continuous spray of water ensures the area is kept cool while tissue is removed.
  • Peace of Mind: Many children are fascinated with the tools and machinery in our office, but drills and needles are far from favorites. With laser dentistry, we can avoid the use of them altogether so children can relax and enjoy their experience without worry.
  • Efficient: Waterlase can cover a wider surface area than the tip of a single drill, allowing for more efficient treatments. Since local anesthesia might not be necessary, the dentist can also cover more treatments without only focusing on areas that are numbed or applying extra anesthetic.

What Can Laser Dentistry be Used For?

Laser dentistry is an incredibly versatile tool. It’s used to remove both soft tissue, such as gums and the connective tissue under the tongue, and hard tissue like teeth and bone. Here are several of the most common uses of laser dentistry  in our office:

  • Removing areas of tooth decay to prepare for fillings or dental crowns
  • Performing frenectomies to relieve lip and tongue-tie
  • Cleaning around and below the gumline to prevent gum disease
  • Removing extra tissue that prevents a tooth from erupting
  • Treating mouth sores and ulcers

Does My Child Need a Laser Frenectomy?

During your child’s examination, we’ll get a comprehensive look at your child’s oral structure. Although frenectomies are performed for all ages, infancy is the best time to take action. Their growing mouths heal quickly with less trauma. It also prevents teething and nursing problems caused by the tension of lip and tongue-tie.

Here are few symptoms of lip and tongue-tie your child may experience from infancy to early childhood:

  • A folded, heart-shaped tongue when opening the mouth or crying
  • Difficulty during nursing or latching
  • Speech impediments for older children
  • Receding gums from connective tissue pressure
  • Consistent mouth breathing during sleep
  • Choking or gasping during feeding

What is a Frenectomy?

The procedure is performed completely in-house by our trained team. Once your child is in a comfortable position on their back, local anesthesia is applied if necessary. The dentist carefully controls a soft-tissue laser to gently remove the restrictive area from the frenulum. The laser causes minimal bleeding, and the entire process is complete in around 5-10 minutes.
